After any natural disaster — including the recent wildfires — some residents may find themselves without power and in need of rebuilding their home.
During these difficult times, Southern California Edison has outlined the steps needed to navigate the rebuild process. First, customers will most likely need a temporary source of electricity.
Step one: Apply for Temporary Power
- Reach out to the local city or county planning department for needed permits.
- Call SCE at 1-800-250-7339 to begin the process and complete a temporary power application.
- Work with your contractor to install a temporary power pole or pedestal.
- Get the temporary power pole or pedestal inspected by your local jurisdiction. Once approved they will send documentation of inspection to SCE, and we will come to install a meter within five to seven days.
Step two: Preparing for Permanent Service
- As you rebuild your home, you will need permanent service, but you must apply for that service before construction begins.
- Contact SCE for permanent electric service as soon as your building plans are approved by the local jurisdiction.
- To apply you’ll need to complete a customer project information sheet and a design option letter.
- Have your site plans handy (CAD File, panel single line diagram, load calculations and grant deed).
Step three: Apply for Permanent Service
- Permanent electric service requires a separate application from your temporary service. Call 1-800-250-7339 to begin.
- Next, a planner will contact you to discuss the project details.
- Complete your part of the energization process requirements.
- Schedule an inspection and final approval of the meter panel with your local jurisdiction.
- Provide your signed contract and pricing calculation sheets, if applicable.
- Provide payment, if applicable.
- Provide all signed easements, if applicable.
Solar customers impacted by a natural disaster must notify SCE of their intent to rebuild within two years from the date of the major disaster to qualify for their original Net Energy Metering rate. They must also complete their NEM system rebuild and submit a new NEM application within four years from the date of the disaster. To notify us of your intent to rebuild your NEM system, please complete the disaster support form.
