As summer kicks off in Southern California, now is the time to take advantage of programs that will reduce your energy use and lower your electric bill.
By voluntarily reducing electricity use during peak demand hours, customers can earn bill credits, help prevent power outages and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Southern California Edison offers two main programs:
Summer Discount Plan: SCE installs a free, remote-controlled device on your air conditioning unit that cycles the A/C on and off during high-demand periods to help conserve energy. By enrolling, customers can receive up to $160 in bill credits between June 1-Oct. 1.
Smart Energy Program: For customers with a smart thermostat, SCE will adjust the temperature during periods of high demand by up to four degrees to help conserve energy — you can override the change at any time. Enrolled customers can receive a $75 sign-up bonus and up to $40 in annual bill credits between June 1-Sept. 30.
Participation is free. Sign up and learn more.
Tips to Save Energy and Money
- Pre-cool your home. Turn the A/C on in the morning before it gets hot — this saves energy and money as electricity is cheaper before and after 4-9 p.m.
- Close blinds and curtains to block out heat.
- Use ceiling fans to reduce reliance on air conditioning.
- Unplug electronics when not in use.
- Set thermostats to a recommended 78°F or higher when home and 85°F when away. Turning it off will cause your A/C to work harder to cool the home once its turned back on.
