Cool Your Home While Lowering Bills

SCE offers tips on how small AC tweaks can lead to big energy savings.

As summer temperatures climb across Southern California, so does energy use and electric bills. Stay cool without breaking the bank by making a few simple tweaks to improve your air conditioner efficiency and lower your electricity bill.

It all starts with making sure you’re up to date on maintenance. From there, making small modifications — like adjusting the thermostat and sealing ducts — will go a long way to reduce energy consumption.

Five tips to help cut cooling costs this summer:

  1. Raise the Thermostat
Setting the thermostat just a few degrees higher — 78°F while at home and 85°F while away — can reduce cooling costs by up to 10%. Smart thermostats make this even easier by learning a set schedule and adjusting automatically.
  2. Seal and Insulate Ductwork
Leaky ducts can waste up to 30% of cooled air. Sealing and insulating ducts, especially those in attics or crawl spaces, helps more cooled air reach its destination.
  3. Clean or Replace Filters Regularly
Dirty filters restrict airflow and force systems to work harder. Replacing filters every one to three months can improve efficiency and extend the life of the unit.
  4. Use Fans to Circulate Air
Ceiling and portable fans can help distribute cool air more evenly, allowing for the thermostat to be raised without sacrificing comfort.
  5. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up
Annual maintenance checks can catch issues early and help your system run at peak performance, saving energy and money.
