SCE Internship Inspires Growth and Grid Innovation
SCE Internship Inspires Growth and Grid Innovation
When Angela Luo began her internship at Southern California Edison, she expected to simply sharpen a few skills and refine her approach to a meaningful career.
Instead, she dove headfirst into projects that help strengthen grid reliability — rolling up her sleeves to code, develop web tools and get a hands-on understanding of how power flows from source to socket.
“I never expected to learn as much as I have at SCE,” said Luo. “I’m exploring new algorithms and computer models, gaining hands-on experience and enhancing my skills in a way that a classroom can’t replicate.”
As a rising junior at the University of California, Los Angeles, Luo is majoring in statistics and data science and minoring in data science engineering. She uses her background in data analysis to help SCE’s Asset Management team, partnering with engineering on the development of a Grid Connectivity Model (GCM) circuit validation tool — a digital platform to map and provide access to all of SCE’s electrical circuit and equipment data. This tool helps engineers quickly identify and resolve issues across the electric grid, improving the reliability and efficiency of energy delivery to customers.
A normal day in the office for Angela Luo includes writing code to map layers on digital platforms showing electrical equipment information.
“The model is primarily used internally at SCE, but it ultimately serves our customers,” Luo said. “Our engineers use it to fix anything in the grid that’s broken. It can also confirm the correct voltage is reaching homes and locate malfunctions in electrical circuits. This all contributes to customers receiving electricity smoothly.”
Beyond GCM, Luo is also working on a chatbot for an interactive map of SCE’s service area that details how much energy can be generated in the grid to support clean energy integration. This chatbot helps answer any questions customers may have on how to use the website with ease.
While keeping her community electrically connected motivates the work that she does, connecting with her community at SCE has been important to Luo as well.
“Everyone at SCE has been so welcoming and willing to help with my professional development,” she said. “Working in two different offices, I’m able to meet twice as many people and connect with twice as many interns. Building these connections has been one of my favorite parts of my time here.”

Luo is one of 140 interns participating in SCE’s summer 2025 internship program, which offers a wide range of roles across the company. With opportunities to attend in-person events, volunteer outings and intern mixers, the program has allowed Luo to build lasting relationships and explore the many career paths available at SCE.
“The SCE summer intern program has been an incredible asset to our company and is instrumental in building a pipeline of future team members,” said Tricia Joyner, SCE's principal manager of Talent Acquisition. “It not only brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table, but also fosters a dynamic two-way learning environment. Our interns consistently demonstrate enthusiasm, dedication and a willingness to contribute meaningfully to projects.”
Several intern events are held throughout the summer to encourage networking, collaboration and continued growth.
Luo’s time at SCE has been more than just a summer internship — it’s been a launchpad. Looking to the future, she aims to continue her schooling and earn an MBA. She hopes to use her education and time at SCE to pursue a career in project management and leverage her talents in data science and design to focus on the business side of engineering.
“This internship has meant so much to me because of the skills I’ve gained, the people I’ve met and the confidence I’ve built,” Luo said. “I’ve learned a lot — and I’m just getting started.”
